An odd day in the evens


It was a day of strike in Kerala, yeah it happens often here. It was a one day strike by some political party. So I planned to ride along with my friend. We started early around four in the morning so that we can cross the Kerala border by six before the strike starts. And yes we did it. It was a ride from Perinthalmanna in Malappuram district of Kerala to the queen of hills 'Ooty' in The Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. We reached Gudallur around seven. Our first halt was the Eucalyptus forests in the Gudallur to Ooty main road. All of a sudden you enter into the Eucalypts forest. The aroma of Eucalyptus and those tall red trees all around make you feel like you are somewhere in dreamland. This place is where you begin sensing the Nilgiris as you start heading to Ooty. It was early in the morning with no traffic on the road and the scarce mist all around made us stop there for a while enjoying the breeze which carries the fragrance of Eucalyptus. Later we moved ahead towards Ooty.



Our first stop was at the Needle rock viewpoint. It is such an amazing spot with an entire view of the mountains and the forest. If you could have some fog around you then the place seems even more beautiful. It was an amazing day for us at the Needle Rock viewpoint with great light which didn't spoil the view. I was saddened miserably for the beauty of the place was being destroyed by the travellers, who have no accountability for the trash they put, but still, the TN Forest department is doing their best to maintain the area well. We spent almost two hours there enjoying the view and the wind. It is a spot where you would wish to stay even for a more extended time.



Later we started with no plan ahead. We took a right turn from the main road to enjoy the farmlands. The road leads us to a remarkably amazing view. I was remembering the quote I read sometime in the past “Wrong roads often lead to beautiful destinations”, but it was never a wrong road, it was the right one. We reached a place where we were surrounded by steep hills and everything that bordered us was farmlands and we also saw a small road curling through these farmlands which were elegant. I am not sure how great I can express the excellence of that place, but it was one of the best views I ever had.


Quickly it started drizzling. The rain of Nilgiris is always amazing. To me, it was always enjoyable to ride in the rain. With no raincoat, we enjoyed the drizzle and rode towards the heart of Ooty town. I was shivering in the rain and the temperature was eighteen degrees at two o'clock in the afternoon. We did not wish to go to the common spots of Ooty like Botanical Garden, Boat House or Pykara since we had been there countless times. We headed towards Cairnhills which was a reserved forest area near Ooty. It was a hunting ground in the period of British as per the information provided by the forest officer there. It is such an astonishing place much next to the town which is far away from the crowd. The silence and tranquillity of the place could never be experienced anywhere else. There the forest department even provides accommodation. 

Later we had a ride through those village settlements of the Nilgiris and motored back towards Gudallur. On the way back we had tea near the highway in the middle of tea plantations with all greenery around and a slight drizzle. We reached back at Perinthalmanna around eight o'clock in the night. It was an unexpected trip but was one forever. Such rides will always tempt you over, to get lost on the roads again and again.

I also have been to the Needle rock view point. I went there for sunset. It is a spectacular place indeed. Ooty is just a heaven. I visit ooty often !

Most of the travellers does not know about needle rock view point it seems.Its such a fantastic spot and ofcourse as you said..Ooty is a heaven
